Onshore Wind

MMI’s experience in onshore wind energy is as mature as the industry itself.

Advances in blade design and control system technologies have resulted in larger, more efficient, wind turbines that have helped to make wind power commercially attractive. These larger systems require robust foundations that must be designed to withstand the substantial wind loads and overturning. MMI provides an integrated solution to address the loads, structural and foundation design requirements to meet the needs of large wind systems.  MMI has also provided risk assessment services to HSE to assist in preparing land use planning guidance in the UK.  

MMI provides risk assessment, structural, mechanical and geotechnical engineering services to the wind industry with a specific focus on the development of foundations for sites with unusual or complex soils. These services include:

• The simulation of wind load for extreme and operating conditions using the FAST software developed at NREL
• Fully coupled, soil-foundation-structure-turbine, analysis to evaluate the dynamic response of the system and to develop engineering solutions that avoid resonance conditions.
• The design of mat, gravity and piled foundations.
• Foundation improvement through deep soil mixing
• The design of foundation concepts to place wind turbines on landfill sites
