In general, Kameleon FireEx (KFX) has been the ‘go-to’ CFD tool for fire modelling in the Oil and Gas Industry, but times are changing, and FLACS has now supplemented its offering of dispersion and explosion modelling with the capability to model fires. We were lucky enough to get an initial trial of the FLACS fire capability and have carried out validation and comparison work against KFX and Ansys-CFX (multi-purpose CFD code). The results of this work were published in a poster at the International Colloquium on the Dynamics of Explosions and Reactive Systems (ICDERS) Conference – click here to download a copy.

MMI intends to extend this work further in the future to look at impinging releases and large scale comparisons. Watch this space for further updates!
